I loved them and hope you go far.

As for part time job i am not sure about that but maybe think about joining an art group or enter art competitions if there are any where you are. This could give you an outlet or place to display them. I could see them being used mainly as blank greeting cards but also as prints and/or framed but first you need to get involved with some sort of organisation who can help/guide you in the right direction – this would also put you in touch with other artists.

Sorry to say it but it could well be a long haul.

Good luck i hope you do well.

Traditionally it leads to a job in the mail room of a large company, and eventually to one of the executive offices. Either that or cab driver in a ski resort community.

You can definitely take that higher than you think. Companies like Pixar Studio, or other animation studios, need people with a studio art degree to draw characters for them. With that type of degree, a major animation studio would definitely consider hiring you.

Degrees needed for Art Careers and Museum work?

I really love to draw and paint. I love art (any type, whether it is of building, structures. nature, etc). I’ve been struggling with figuring our what to do with my life and have been going back and forth between majors at sch now. I’m now 21 and do not have a degree yet, because of this. I’m now considering majoring in Fine Arts I know I cannot make a living as an artist, but I am interested in museum work and art galleries. What kind of degrees do they look for in order to get a job in a museum? I am prepared to get a masters, but I am not sure in what. I would want to get a masters that would be versatile enough for me to be able to get a job in a museum as well as other positions. Can anyone help me out? Should I major in Fine Arts? And what kind of versatile masters degrees within the field of Art should I be looking at? Also, is work stable in this field? Would it be easy to obtain a job with a masters degree? Also, If you’ve worked in museums or art galleries, pls tell me about your experiences. Or if you have a B.A in any arts field, what are your doing now for a living? Thanks.

Serge Martin answers:

I’m really on the wrong side of the Big Pond to advise you about degrees, but over here it helps to do History of Art plus a secondary course in something like Conservation, Museum Administration, Accountancy, Library Studies. My daughter did a degree, but didn’t have another speciality and is now working in publishing as there was too much competition for the few public museum/gallery junior posts.

Make sure you put a watermark with your name or the website’s name over the image when it can be viewed by the general public…I know a girl who’s photography was extremely popular on deviantart, and people started stealing her self portraits and using them as avatars and wallpapers for myspace without crediting her!

Its not maliciously done in most cases, but a lot of the time photography and artwork online is seen without a source: in other words, people don’t think about who created the beautiful image they are pasting all over their website.

What is the fastest way to sell art that I have inherited?

My grandfather passed away a couple of years ago, leaving behind a storage room full of signed art prints with appraisals from an art gallery he owned years ago. I have tried selling them online on eBay and Craigslist with no luck at all. I have heard that art is very difficult to sell, so I am wondering if there is a way to sell all of the art at once, or maybe even consign it somewhere. I just really don’t know how to go about it.

There are several different artists/styles and I am able to pull up information online about the artists.

Serge Martin answers:

Your best bet is to work with a local or regional art broker which is the polite term for an art re-seller. Check your yellow pages for art brokers or call a local gallery and ask who does re-sale in your area. Art re-selling is handled very differently then the original sale through a retail gallery, artist’s studio or art fair. Many who specialize in this get quick and amazing results. Best of luck.

im interested in finding ways to sell my artwork and generally get recognition in the art world?

hello everyone. so im only 18 but i consider my work to be on a professional level. (not meaning to sound conceited)

i mostly do traditional art such as portraits and still life in oil and acrillic painting, as well as pencil and charcoal work, however i can do commercial art if i need to, i would just like to remain in the fine arts genre if possible.

ive received recognition from the main newspaper in salt lake for my work as an apprentice, designing and creating a public mural with the help of 4 others. ive also been asked to do commissioned art work, but im wondering about other ways to sell my art, or just to get my work better known.

i have several connections in the utah art scene and i plan on meeting with them to talk about submitting art to the local galleries, but if you have other ideas of how to get my art work “out there” it would be much appreciated.

by the way, i would prefer not to sell my art online just yet, though i might look into that at another time.

I’m not sure if you’ve heard of this website before but it’s called deviantart
(http://www.deviantart.com/)
it’s basically a site where artist display their artwork and could even make money out of it without having to give up the original copy

basically they have a print system where you can sell merchandise with your work on it, most of the profits go to making it, and delivering it it however but the artist gets his/her cut
(and if you pay for a print subscription you can get a bigger one)

because the site mostly consists of sellers and not many buyers however, it’s up to the artist o promote so I advise aadvertisingon Craigslist.com, or making your work in public so people can see and if they talk to you give them a bBusinesscard with the address to your shop page along with contact info.

(shop address only slightly vary from you real deviantart page for instance my account is this twilightor.deviantart.com while the store link is http://twilightor.deviantart.com/store/)

chances are if you don’t sell prints commissions are bound to happen

other ways include:
building a network. You know, join a museum or group of artists to meet other artists as well as potential customers. Then ask other artists questions about how they are selling and distributing their work.

Showing what you can do by sending out press releases and propose article profiles to local newspapers and national publications to heighten awareness of you and your work. Articles that feature you and show photographs of your work garner attention and potential clients.

Make your artwork in public where you could offer bussiness cards to anyone that approaches you.

Enter Contests and Competitions. Use any honors and awards you receive to net publicity and greater exposure for your work.

List your work on eBay.com to appeal to consumers who don’t have the time or inclination to pay gallery prices. Set a reserve price that assures you’ll get a decent return on your time

Sell yourself to the gallery owner. Be able to talk about your work convincingly and clearly, mention how it’s created and why it will appeal to people (like the owner).

Can I draw gay art and like it and still be straight?

I am currently involved in the online art community on deviantart.net and i want to be able to draw males without being considered gay.
Who cares what other people think? Draw what you want. There will always be people who like it and others who don’t. That’s life. Don’t bottle up your creativity in other people’s limitations.

I don’t understand how there can be such a thing as “gay art”. You draw a male. He might be nude, he might be aroused or whatever, but if a girl views that image and gets turned on then is it suddenly straight art? Who cares? Not everything revolves around your orgasm. You can appreciate the sensuality of an image without having to label yourself.

Sounds like you’re on your way to a really fun career.

I work in law doing research in our corporate library and i’ll be finished with Paralegal school shortly and then i’ll do that.

I typically shop on overstock.com because I can get all the higher end stuff cheaper. Like a month ago I bought a pair of Chip and Pepper and a pair of J & Company jeans for under $40 each.

If also like Loehmann’s and the Rack at Neiman Marcus. These are both stores where they ship all the excess stuff they didn’t sale and sale it for cheaper.

I’m a bargain shopper. I’ve also bought things from WetSeal, Forever 21, Hot Topic (love their band tees) and Express or wherever really.

I know some people work up till their due date, and kudos to them but already the symptoms of pregnancy have interfered with my job. I’ve been late and missed days and I feel really bad.
If you have an opportunity to do what you love, then go for it. Life sucks enough. Might as well have a job that you like! Lol

Okay. You could always go into graphic design. Or the advertising field. You can make a good salary with those professions.

You could study art and become a dealer. Work for larger galleries or museums.

You can go into set design for movies, television and print work.

There are so many possibilities.

And you can STILL sell your work in a gallery and give the gallery owner a cut for housing your work. Selling art can be very profitable.

Don’t let anyone tell you, or make you feel like that path isn’t worth anything.

Serge Martin answers:

It usually takes at least 2 weeks to hear back from them. They are probably trying to get their ducks in order such as setting up for the employment. When I had my interview for the job I have currently it took about 2 weeks to hear back from them. I was like you, very enthusiastic about getting the position and it was a very stressful time as well due to the fact it would be an awesome job. If after two weeks you haven’t heard back form them then give them a call to see what is going on. Most companies will let you know by phone call, or mail that you did not get the job, but again if you feel the way you do about your interview and you sent them each a thank-you e-mail( good thought by the way ) I believe your made for the job.

On the other hand if you do not receive it, don’t despair there are lots of other careers out there for ya !

Gallery owner, Art Gallery Owner, Gallerist. They all mean the same. If its your own business you don’t need a degree, but most people start out working for another gallery to gain experience. In that case you will need to acquire substantial knowledge about art, A degree in Art history can be useful.

What skills are product design employers looking for these days? I have 2:1 degree in Product Design from 2002?

I graduated in 2002 with a 2:1 in Product Design. At that time I tried a little to apply for graduate jobs but gave up quickly and got distracted by travelling.
For various reasons, one was starting up an online art gallery, I haven’t gained any employment experience in this field and somehow 7 years has passed.
I have had a variety of mundane office jobs which for the last couple of years I have combined with running my own business.

I am now considering applying for some product design jobs but wanted to find out from some employed product designers how out of date I am with programmes, skills etc
I am obviously rusty with my drawing skills, but I still have the ideas and a natural eye for design and I use Illustrator and photoshop for promotional material I design for my business. This is on a PC not mac.
In addition to this I feel more equipped with an understanding of business image, brands and marketing.

I basically have more life skills now but am rusty when it comes to developing a concept into its final presentation stages. However I am willing to take some courses to refresh my skills and learn some new ones.

I’d just like to know what I would need to refresh in order to be considered for a job with no experience and a 7 year old degree?

I’d like to re phrase some of this but I have to go to football now….hopefully you get the general idea

Thanks, Jason

I used to really struggle making ends meet. Fortunately, I was able to find a couple work at home programs that actually worked. Now I make enough money to pay all my bills, and put extra in the bank each month. I blogged about it on my website. Http://jobsfromhome.notlong.com

Serge Martin answers:

Attachments are routine because of the format of an invoice which is often done with a spreadsheet program or some other program and then the person uses acrobat to read it.

If the invoice is just typed in Word, it can be pasted into the e-mail because the e-mail program can read it and pass it on to the recipient. Our company uses a data program to generate invoices.

Serge Martin answers:

First off… How rude!!!!!!!! That man has me fuming knocking your confidence like that!

Art as I guess any other creative profession writing/modelling/singing is a career of knock backs and pick yourself ups because at the end of the day it’s based on opinion as people’s likes and dislikes vary! So dust yourself off and smile and look at your work and if you think i want to show my work then think positive.

You may have just got off on the wrong foot with the Gallery owner, a reason could have been he was defensive thinking you were critising his choice of show peices. Be the bigger person forget your little indiscretion and approach him professionally as an art gallery owner/appreciater and not as Rude man.
Are they looking for volunteers at the gallery, maybe learning about the gallery you can see how things work/processes of getting your art shown. Make an appointment with him or attend a showing and express your interest.
If your not feeling as confident yet write an inspiring but professional and formal letter/email detailing your passion for art and how to get work shown, maybe even ask for some feedback on some work.
Building a pleasent relationship with this man is key to getting into his gallery.

Also look for galleries in towns nearby, look for events they may be having and never be afraid to get involved, learn more about the way art world works whilst taking baby steps into it.

You also must prepare yourself for feedback both positive and negative, art is down to opinion don’t forget but always look to improve. Good art appreciaters will never seek to destroy an artists confidence but rather suggest improvements mostly technique. You must be able to say “okay I appreciate what’s been said what can I do to improve”.

I would suggest taking an evening art class, not so acedemic perhaps but rather to learn new techniques and to inspire and re-energize yourself. Also you will have a teacher there who can help restore some confidance and provide some guidence which would be invaluable.

Also get your name out if you want to be an artist! Shameless self promotion is the key! I know your not to keen about websites but a homepage on yourself, designed by you and featuring artwork could provide a “base” for anyone interested in you. Make it personal and then spread the word creatively.

Drum up some interest locally, you could create individual postcards/business cards with the title of the small artwork (i’m talking business card sized here) make them all different with different words vibrant and an expression of yourself and leave them around, say one on the bus stop and one on the chair in a library, a coffee mug that will be collected.

Sonorous
tell me what you thinK!

This will get people onto your site and learning more about you! You could create a forum of where people can express what they think of their “Personal card” and once they know there cards unique it will create a buzz that will make them take notice! You’ll get mroe people on your site posting because the cards knowing there unique and they found it will make them feel good.

The above idea will only work if you pour your passion into making the cards and the website, making it vibrant and fun so that your having fun and the person who finds the card thinks “hey I’m special.”

The thing about art is you make it fun and passionate and about you, prepare yourself for knock backs but make sure you know your strengths and weaknesses and have fun! Start it off as a hobby and then if your lucky make a living out of it!

Fact: It took Thomous Edison 100 mistakes to invent the light bulb
His Reply: I know 100 ways not to make a lightbulb!

I wish you all the best!

Serge Martin answers:

Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso (25 October 1881 – 8 April 1973) was a Spanish painter, draughtsman, and sculptor. As one of the most recognized figures in 20th-century art, he is best known for co-founding the Cubist movement and for the wide variety of styles embodied in his work. Among his most famous works are the proto-Cubist Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907) and Guernica (1937), his depiction of the German bombing of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

I. Picasso’s training under his father began before 1890. In 1897 his realism became tinged with Symbolist influence, in a series of landscape paintings rendered in non naturalistic violet and green tones. What some call his Modernist period (1899–1900) followed. His exposure to the work of Rossetti, Steinlen, Toulouse-Lautrec and Edvard Munch, combined with his admiration for favorite old masters such as El Greco, led Picasso to a personal version of modernism in his works of this period.

II. Picasso’s Blue Period (1901–1904) consists of somber paintings rendered in shades of blue and blue-green, only occasionally warmed by other colors. This period’s starting point is uncertain; it may have begun in Spain in the spring of 1901, or in Paris in the second half of the year. Many paintings of gaunt mothers with children date from this period. In his austere use of color and sometimes doleful subject matter—prostitutes and beggars are frequent subjects—Picasso was influenced by a trip through Spain and by the suicide of his friend Carlos Casagemas. Starting in autumn of 1901 he painted several posthumous portraits of Casagemas, culminating in the gloomy allegorical painting La Vie (1903).

III.The Rose Period (1904–1906) is characterized by a more cheery style with orange and pink colors, and featuring many circus people, acrobats and harlequins known in France as saltimbanques. The harlequin, a comedic character usually depicted in checkered patterned clothing, became a personal symbol for Picasso. Picasso met Fernande Olivier, a model for sculptors and artists, in Paris in 1904, and many of these paintings are influenced by his warm relationship with her, in addition to his increased exposure to French painting. The generally upbeat and optimistic mood of paintings in this period is reminiscent of the 1899–1901 period.

IV. Picasso’s African-influenced Period (1907–1909) begins with the two figures on the right in his painting, Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, which were inspired by African artifacts.

V. Analytic cubism (1909–1912) is a style of painting Picasso developed along with Georges Braque using monochrome brownish and neutral colors. Both artists took apart objects and “analyzed” them in terms of their shapes. Picasso and Braque’s paintings at this time have many similarities. Synthetic cubism (1912–1919) was a further development of the genre, in which cut paper fragments—often wallpaper or portions of newspaper pages—were pasted into compositions, marking the first use of collage in fine art.

VI. Classicism and Surrealism: In the period following the upheaval of World War I, Picasso produced work in a neoclassical style. This “return to order” is evident in the work of many European artists in the 1920s, including André Derain, Giorgio de Chirico, and the artists of the New Objectivity movement. Picasso’s paintings and drawings from this period frequently recall the work of Ingres. During the 1930s, the minotaur replaced the harlequin as a common motif in his work. His use of the minotaur came partly from his contact with the surrealists, who often used it as their symbol, and it appears in Picasso’s Guernica.

In short: He is generally considered in his technical virtuosity, enormous versatility, and incredible originality and prolificity to have been the foremost figure in 20th-century art.

Pablo Picasso lived in the late 19th to mid-20th Century. Vincent van Gogh lived in the 19th Century, as did Paul Cezanne. All of these “Modern Artists” had simplified styles that were not so realistic. Leonardo da Vinci is the best answer of the choices you give. He was a Renaissance Italian artist who lived in the 15th-16th Century. He did use atmospheric perspective, but he was not the first man to do so.
